Dr. Laura Mcguire
Dr. Laura McGuire is an internationally recognized consultant, survivor, researcher, seminarian, and author of the book Creating Cultures of Consent (Rowman & Littlefield, 2021). Dr. McGuire is a survivor of domestic violence and scholar dedicated to researching and teaching on trauma-informed care, cultural inclusion, and sexual violence prevention. She brings her journey from a former high school drop-out and victim to a doctor of education and a thriving survivor to everything she does. Dr. McGuire knows that education is empowerment because she is living proof of this testimony.
Dr. McGuire earned her bachelor’s degree in social sciences from Thomas Edison State University and her graduate degrees in educational leadership for change from Fielding Graduate University. Her doctoral dissertation, entitled “Seen but Not Heard: Pathways to Improve Inclusion of LGBT Persons and Sexual Trauma Survivors in Sexual Health Education,” examined the marginalization of sexual minorities within health education on a global scale. She is currently a student at Earlham School of Religion and teaches at Widener University.
Dr. McGuire is a certified full-spectrum doula, professional teacher, a certified sexual health educator, and a vinyasa yoga instructor. Her experience includes both public and private sectors, middle schools, high schools, and university settings. In 2015, she served as the first Sexual Violence Prevention and Education Program Manager at the University of Houston, and in 2017, she became the first Victim Advocate/Prevention Educator at the US Merchant Marine Academy. She is a member of the American Association of Sexuality Educators Counselors and Therapists (AASECT), Society of Professional Consultants, and is a member of numerous boards and committees. Dr. McGuire lives in the United States, where she works as a full-time consultant and speaker.
